Why Your High Footed Champagne Glass Keeps Breaking at the Stem – 2 Handling Mistakes

2026 05/18

You buy a beautiful set of high footed champagne glass. Six months later, you're down to three. The stems snap when you're washing them. Or worse, a guest picks one up and the bowl separates from the base. You blame thin glass. But the real culprit? Two handling mistakes that most people make every single day.

Mistake 1: Twisting While Drying

Here's the scene: you've just washed your champagne glass. You grab the base with one hand and the bowl with the other, twisting a cloth inside the bowl while holding the stem. That twist creates torque. The stem – the thinnest part of any wine glasses or high footed champagne glass – cannot handle rotational force. It's designed for vertical pressure only. One tiny micro-crack starts at the joint. Next time you pour a bubbly toast, pop – the stem gives way.

The fix: never twist. Hold the base firmly. Wipe the bowl with a gentle up-and-down motion. Let the stem air-dry if needed.

Mistake 2: Overstacking in the Cabinet

You nest your champagne glass inside each other to save space. Bad idea. The rim of one high footed champagne glass presses against the stem of the one below. Over weeks of cabinet vibrations (closing doors, pulling out other wine glasses), that constant micro-pressure fatigues the glass. Then one day, you lift a glass and the stem stays in the cabinet.

Instead, store champagne glass upright in a felt-lined drawer or hang them by the base. Never stack. Never lean.

What About Dishwashers?

Dishwasher heat cycles expand and contract the glass differently at the stem joint. That's a third mistake, but we promised two. So here's a bonus: hand-wash your high footed champagne glass with lukewarm water and mild soap. No abrasive pads. No twisting. Dry on a soft mat.

A good champagne glass should last for years. Stop breaking stems with bad habits. Treat the stem like the engineering weak point it is – because it is. Your next toast will be much less awkward when everyone's glass is still in one piece.
